아틀라스 혜성은 7월 1일 (약 9.8등급)에 지구에서 0.64 AU 떨어진 근일점에 도달합니다. 아틀라스 혜성은 발견 당시 예상했던 것보다 더 빨리 밝아지고 있으며, 7월 초에 9등급에 도달할 것입니다. 이 혜성은 8월 18일 (약 11.6 등급)에 지구에 가장 가까워질 것이지만 그때쯤이면 태양에서 멀어지면서 빠르게 어두워집니다. 아틀라스 혜성은 현재 작은곰자리를 통과하고 있으며, 7월 6일경 (9.8 등급) 작은곰자리의 북극 근처를 지나갈 것이므로 북반구에서 관측하기에 아주 좋은 위치에 있습니다.

The comet comes to perihelion on July 1 (9.8 mag) when it will be 0.64 AU from the Earth. It has been brightening faster than was expected at discovery and now looks as if it might reach 9th magnitude in early July. The comet will be closest to the Earth on August 18 (11.6 mag) but by then it will be fading rapidly as it moves away from the Sun. The comet is currently moving through Ursa Minor and it will pass near the pole in Ursa Minor around July 6 (9.8 mag) so it is very well placed for us in the northern hemisphere.

Discovery Magnitude : 18.8 mag.

Discoverer : Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) search program.

Perihelion : 1 July 2023 ― 0.645 AU.

Closest approach to Earth: 18 August 2023 ― 0.375 AU.
