세계 인구의 60%가 거주하는 지구에서 가장 많은 인구가 사는 대륙이다. 메소포타미아 문명을 비롯한 인더스 문명, 황하 문명의 발상지이다. 기독교, 이슬람교, 불교, 유대교, 힌두교 등 세계 주요 종교의 발상지이기도 하다. 유럽과는 우랄산맥을, 아프리카와는 수에즈운하를 경계로 만난다. 아시아는 이슬람교와 건조지역으로 이루어진 서남아시아와 중앙아시아, 힌두교 및 불교 발상지인 남부아시아, 문명의 교차로로 다양한 문화가 나타나는 동남아시아, 그리고 유교, 불교, 한자 등의 문화적 특징을 보이는 동아시아로 구분되며, 저마다 독립적인 문화를 가지고 서로 상호작용을 주고받으며 발전시켰다.

With Ural Mountains dividing Asia from Europe in the west, and meeting Africa on the border of the Suez Canal, Asia is divided into four main regions. Southwest and Central Asia consists of arid regions and is home for many of Islamic faith. The birthplace of Hinduism and Buddhism, South Asia is a region where various cultures appear through the intersection of civilizations. East Asia shows cultural characteristics such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Chinese characters. All four regions have developed and interacted with each other with independent cultures.
